Long before AC/DC, Black Sabbath, and Metallica, there was the original headbanger-the Bighorn Sheep ram. Join The Path Less Taken for Hike of the Headbangers, a unique autumn adventure into the heart of the Sheep River Valley during rutting season. This is the time of year when rams clash in spectacular displays of strength, echoing through the mountains like nature's own heavy metal concert. This 6.4 km round-trip hike along the Foran Grade Trail takes you past dramatic limestone cliffs, rugged Rocky Mountain peaks, and the turquoise waters of the Sheep River. Along the way, you'll learn about the fascinating ecology, behaviour, and conservation story of one of Alberta's most iconic mountain animals. Come dressed as a headbanger and be eligible to win a prize! We'll also visit the Bighorn Lookout, where we'll have the chance to observe these magnificent ungulates in their natural habitat and, with a little luck, witness the action of the rut.
